The President has appointed, for a five-year period, Prof. Liberty Mncube as the Deputy Chairperson of the Competition Tribunal and re-appointed Prof. Imraan Valodia for another five years as a part-time member.
The Competition Tribunal is pleased to announce the appointment of three pre-eminent Senior Counsel who will serve as members. Advocates Geoff Budlender SC, Jerome Wilson SC and Tembeka Ngcukaitobi SC are recognised as leading experts in their areas of practice and join the Tribunal from January, February and April 2023 respectively.
The Competition Tribunal congratulates Ms Doris Tshepe on her appointment by President Cyril Ramaphosa as Competition Commissioner with effect from September 2022. Ms Tshepe, whose appointment was recommended by the Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Ebrahim Patel, will be the first woman to head the Commission since its establishment over two decades ago.
The Tribunal’s Handbook of Case Law, which serves as a guide to selected cases spanning two decades, is now available in electronic format and is accessible online through the Tribunal’s website.
In terms of the COVID-19 Excessive Pricing Regulations, Complaint Referrals may be brought to the Tribunal on an urgent basis. The Tribunal has made provision for the Complaint Referrals to be heard remotely in light of the national lockdown. We have also made provision to hear the referrals on an expedited basis. The Chairperson of the Tribunal has issued the following Directive as a guideline for dealing with the urgent Complaint Referrals (Full statement and regulations attached)
